Sexual and Reproductive Health

Overview

The work of HealthWest in the priority area of sexual and reproductive health focuses on building the capacity of organisations to work with communities to enhance healthy relationships and achieve good sexual and reproductive health.

Our work in this area, which aims for people in Melbourne’s west to have good sexual and reproductive health, is directed by our Health Promotion Network and undertaken by the Sexual and Reproductive Health Working Group led by Women’s Health West.

Issues relating to sexual and reproductive health are linked with HealthWest’s integrated health promotion priorities of mental health and wellbeing, reducing harms associated with drug and alcohol use, and prevention of violence against women.

Sexual and reproductive health is a relatively new priority issue for HealthWest. Initial key tasks have included assessing the data and evidence in greater detail, mapping current services and programs and identifying gaps/areas for improvement in program delivery and organisational capacity. This work will then inform the selection of target groups and settings.

HealthWest uses the following World Health Organisation (WHO) definitions of reproductive and sexual health to guide the implementation of its strategies:

Reproductive Health

“Implies that people are able to have a responsible, satisfying and safe sex life and that they have the capability to reproduce and the freedom to decide, if, when and how often to do so.” (WHO, 2009).

Sexual Health

“Is a state of physical, emotional, mental and social wellbeing in relation to sexuality… not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction, or infirmity. Good sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination, and violence.” (WHO, 2009).

HealthWest also extends its definition of sexual health to include that provided by SIECUS (2002): “Sexual health incorporates sexual development and reproductive health, as well as the ability to develop and maintain meaningful interpersonal relationships; appreciate one’s body; interact with both genders in respectful and appropriate ways; and express affection, love, and intimacy in ways consistent with one’s own values”.

HealthWest approaches its sexual and reproductive health work within the context of cultural, social and human rights approaches, not just biomedical models and the absence of disease. HealthWest also acknowledges the links between sexual and reproductive health, the determinants of health and the influence of socio-economic and bio-physical environments.

Reports

Social Determinants of S&RH 2011 Report

This report consolidates the evidence-base for the social conditions in which we live, work and play that drive sexual and reproductive health. The report is designed to support health practitioners in the west and beyond consider the complex way in which the social determinants of sexual and reproductive health influence and exacerbate health inequities. The report also contains the Western Region Sexual and Reproductive Health Promotion Framework, which provides an overarching conceptual guide to evidence-based sexual and reproductive health promotion planning.
