Medicare Locals announced for 2012 roll out
The Federal Government announced the remaining 38 Medicare Locals on the 11th November. The Macedon Ranges and North Western Melbourne Medicare Local will operations on 1 January 2011.

Federal Parliament passes plain packaging of tobacco legislation
The Commonwealth Government's world-leading tobacco plain packaging legislation passed through the Federal Senate on 10 November, meaning all tobacco products sold in Australia must be in plain packaging from 1 December 2012.

Healthy Eating in Brimbank Welcome Kit for New ArrivalsHealthWest have a number of The Healthy Eating in Brimbank Welcome Kits in hard copy. This resource was developed in 2007 as part of the Food for All project and provides healthy food information in pictorial form and translated to Amharic and Arabic. Approx 40 copies are available.
Integrated Health Promotion
Primary Care Partnerships Integrated Health Promotion achievementsThe Department of Health have released a publication outlining a summary of achievements (including case studies) from integrated health promotion initiatives in PCPs. The document also identifies opportunities for further improvement including: fully integrating plans; strengthening the use of evidence-based interventions; continued improvements in evaluation quality and measuring and reporting; and sharing knowledge.

Social Determinants of Sexual & Reproductive Health report available
Women's Health West (WHW) have produced the Social Determinants of Sexual and Reproductive Health 2011 Report which consolidates the evidence-base for the social conditions in which we live, work and play that drive sexual and reproductive health.
The report is designed to support health practitioners in the west and beyond consider the complex way in which the social determinants of sexual and reproductive health influence and exacerbate health inequities. The report also contains the Western Region Sexual and Reproductive Health Promotion Framework, which provides an overarching conceptual guide to evidence-based sexual and reproductive health promotion planning.
This report, coupled with the Mapping and Needs Analysis Sexual and Reproductive Health in the HealthWest Catchment 2010 Report, will guide the development of a regional primary prevention action plan.

VicHealth releases 'Streets Ahead' evaluation report
VicHealth has released an evaluation report for the 'Streets Ahead' program. The program targets children aged four to 12, and aims to create environments that increased children's active travel and independent mobility in all aspects of their local community life, with a focus on travelling to and from school.
The program involved six local councils, who in facing the many challenges of the unique characteristics of their areas, used a great diversity of approaches and projects to make important gains, including having positive, significant impact on their own awareness and understanding of active travel.

ADMA Clearing House – New Health Literacy & Coronary Heart Disease Management resources
Three resources to support organisations in considering health literacy have been uploaded to the Australian Disease Management Association (ADMA) Clearing House.
Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) Management
The Heart Foundation (Victoria) has worked collaboratively with Northern Division of General Practice to develop an effective CHD model of care that supports best practice cardiovascular care in general practice.

Skilled Volunteers: A Guide for Community Organisations
This handy booklet was created through a collaboration between VCOSS and skilled volunteer providers in Victoria, and was launched on October 27th at the VCOSS Clever Ideas Forum. It features clear information for community organisations about each provider, including eligibility criteria, information about types of volunteers and case studies of successful projects and partnerships. Centres of Research Excellence
The Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute (APHCRI) is now calling for Expressions of Interest for the third round of Centres of Research Excellence funding. APHCRI's Centres of Research Excellence are multi-institutional collaborations aimed at producing research in primary health care policy and systems delivery. APHCRI will fund up to five new Centres in this round, with each Centre receiving $2.5m over the next five years, commencing mid 2012.
Eligible applicants are invited to submit Expressions of Interest to APHCRI by 9th December 2011. Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to submit a full proposal by 20th April 2012. Successful applicants will be announced in June 2012.

Mental Health First Aid Training (Two Days)
This training is appropriate for anyone working with people experiencing mental illness or a mental health problem. Participants gain extensive knowledge about the more pravalent mental health dsorders and how to intervene in a crisis situation. The course facilitator has extensive knowledge with 12 years experience and he is a registered MHFA Master Faciltiator.
When: 8:45 am - 4:30 pm, Day 1- 9 December 2011, Day 2 – 16 December 2011

Aboriginal cultural awareness training
This one-day training program is designed for service providers, front line and reception managers, family support providers. It is delivered by Robyne Latham and Karen Adams who have many years experience working in Aboriginal health and adult education. This training will cover:
- An introduction to Aboriginal History v Active and deep listening
- Unmasking stereotypes
- Considering your working environment
- Providing flexible service delivery
- Experiencing being in the Majority and the Minority

Brimbank Social Justice Coalition Website and Campaign Launch
Brimbank City Council and the Brimbank Social Justice Coalition are inviting local community agencies, service providers and community members to a community lunch to launch the Brimbank Social Justice Coalition’s Website and Campaign. Working in partnership with local agencies the Social Justice Coalition will be advocating to: improve access to public transport; affordable and accessible housing; and industry, employment and education opportunities. The guest speaker for the forum is Jackie Fristacky, Councillor - Yarra City Council and Chairperson of the Metropolitan Transport Forum. Lunch provided.
