The Health Reform Transition Office recently concluded a series of briefings across Australia on the new National Health Reform Agreement

HealthWest Response to Victorian Public Health and Wellbeing Plan 2011-2015

HealthWest are formulating a response to the Victorian Public Health and Wellbeing Plan, as advertised in last fortnight's Welcome to Wednesday. Thank you to all our members who attended the lunchtime workshop on Monday 3 October or have emailed comments for inclusion.

The timeline for submission has been extended to 31 October 2011.

HealthWest Shared Priority Forum - Looking Forward Together

The next Shared Priority Forum 'Looking Forward Together - Setting the Priorities 2012-2015' is focused on the next HealthWest Strategic Plan. The forum will provide HealthWest members with an opportunity to:

  • Contribute to setting the shared priorities of the Partnership for the next 3 years (2012-2015)
  • Contribute to formulating the objectives within the shared priorities
  • Contribute to joining up the ing strategies that link our work in prevention, health promotion, early intervention and treatment

Integrated Health Promotion

Sexual and Reproductive Health in the Western Region – Planning Workshop

Women’s Health West and the Western Region Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) Working Group are holding a workshop bringing together organisations involved in SRH promotion to start building an integrated action plan to redress SRH inequities in the western region.

The workshop provides an opportunity to discuss sexual and reproductive health, its impacts and to clarify what role of local government and community in addressing these issues.

Sharing the evidence - preventing violence against women

VicHealth is holding a stakeholder forum showcasing a selection of the primary prevention of violence against women projects funded under Respect, Responsibility and Equality Phase II, to share in their learning.

A research leader has supported the funded projects to evaluate the impact of their work and contribute to the evidence base for primary prevention activities. These projects form part of a body of work designed to consolidate practice and support the development of sustained changes in policy to prevent violence against women.

Western Region Food Access Profiles

The HealthWest Food Security Network has now completed a set of factsheets that profile food access across the six local government areas across the western metropolitan region of Melbourne.  The Food Access Profiles map the locations of fruit and vegetable outlets, as well as takeaway outlets, highlighting the areas and populations vulnerable to food insecurity. Additionally, the profiles make recommendations for food security action in each local government area.

The Chronic Illness Alliance Self Management Special Interest Group has circulated information about the  Scottish Government's Aliss project, which is aimed at providing a reliable index of online material on self-management.

New Health Coach role at Djerriwarrh Health Services

This new role aims to provide a service for clients with early stage chronic disease and/or multiple risk factors for health.  This position will utilise principles of self-management to support clients to make changes which support better health and wellbeing.

The Department of Health annually conducts a survey of Service Coordination & ICDM practice in Primary Care Partnership member agencies. The aim is to support continuous improvement in the quality of practice to provide consumers with a seamless integrated service response. 

This is an opportunity to get a picture of how Service Coordination is practiced by your agency, for example: response time to referrals, feedback to referral, multi-agency care planning and compliance to privacy requirements.

The survey and further information can be accessed on the Department of Health website. The timeline for completion is by the 31st Oct 2011.

Population Health Planning

'Policy into Practice’: World Conference on Social Determinants of Health discussion paper released

The World Health Organisation has released a discussion entitled ‘Closing the Gap: Policy into practice on social determinants of health’ prior to its upcoming conference on the same topic.  The discussion paper provides guidance on how countries can implement action on social determinants of health, including the recommendations of the WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health.

Working with People with Hoarding Behaviours DVD

Southern Metropolitan Region HACC Training in partnership with the Inner South Community Health Service present a new DVD to support working with people with hoarding behaviours.

The Working with People with Hoarding Behaviours DVD explores hoarding with a range of experts and care providers who have worked with people who hoard. Some people with hoarding behaviours also share their personal insights.There are also two resource documents available: Discussion and Reflection Questions and Useful Resources.

This DVD can be used as a learning resource within a team or by individuals. The Discussion and Reflection Questions have been designed for use prior to viewing the DVD and at the conclusion of each of the five sections. Useful Resources includes a definition of compulsive hoarding, links to websites, materials and ideas for future steps. It can be printed via a computer.

Cost: $15.00 per DVD + $5.50 standard postage + $2.00 insurance ($22.50 per DVD)

Mental health and women seminar

WIRE Women’s Information is holding a seminar on mental health and women. Matilda Robinson has Bipolar disorder. She will share her experience of years of misdiagnoses and her final diagnosis of Bipolar about three years ago. Isabell Collins, Director of the Victorian Mental Illness Awareness Council, will speak from the professional perspective of mental health and women.

Community Consultation: The rights of older people

The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission wants to learn more about the human rights issues affecting older Victorians.

Three methods of providing views and perspectives on the issues are available: a community consultation, an online survey and a discussion webpage.

Community consultation

This special forum will be opened by Australia's Age Discrimination Commissioner, the Hon. Susan Ryan, AO. This is a free event, with morning and afternoon tea and a light lunch provided.

When: 9am–4pm, Friday 28 October. Registration from 9am, forum starts at 9.30am.
