Population Projections
Description
The Strategic Information and Research Branch, Department of Sustainability and Environment, has released population projections for Victoria. Figures are derived from demographic data (e.g. population estimates), housing development information, analysis of economic, social and demographic trends, and knowledge gained from consultations with stakeholders. The information shows what the size and age distribution of the population is likely to be in the future.
Quality and Applicability
Population projections are published in Victoria in Future and are the official projections for Victoria.
Population projections are the best figures to use if you want to know about the changes that are likely to occur in a given population based on growth (e.g. birth rates and migration) and other patterns (e.g. fertility rates, deaths and ageing).
Coverage
Projections are prepared for all local government areas and statistical local areas in Victoria by sex and age (five-year age groups).
Reference Date
Projections are for the period 2001 to 2031 (five-year intervals).
Release Date
The most recent issue of Victoria in Future was published in September 2004 and is based on population estimates from the 2001 Census. With the release of population estimates from the 2006 Census, the next scheduled update of projections is June 2008. The update will be followed by a series of regional presentations in the latter half of 2008. Also, in response to demand for local level data, projections for towns and suburbs will be added to forthcoming publications of Victoria in Future (scheduled for November 2008). All of this work will be undertaken by the Spatial Analysis and Research Branch, Department of Planning and Community Development.

Additional Data Source(s)
Population projections have been prepared by forecast.id, an online product designed to support local government planning and available through council websites. Like Victoria in Future, forecast.id applies birth, death and migration rates to population estimates along with an analysis of urban development drivers (e.g. residential development). This results in forecasts for local government areas and smaller areas (e.g. suburbs). To access figures, go to your council website and search for community forecasts. More on forecast.id.
Population projections based on Victoria in Future are available through the Victorian Local Governance Association online library of social statistics.
