Life Expectancy
Description
The Public Health Branch, Rural and Regional Health and Aged Care Services, Department of Human Services, has prepared estimates of life expectancy for the Victorian population. The information shows the expected average life span at birth providing current mortality rates continue into the future.
Quality and Applicability
Mortality rates are based on registered deaths for a given year.
Whilst information about life expectancy is useful in terms of capturing the mortality experience of a population, it does not take into account the number of healthy years that may be lost due to disability, with disability defined broadly as all departures from a state of complete health due to disease and injury as well as disability. See disease burden for more.
Coverage
Life expectancy estimates are available for local government areas. Estimates are by sex.
Reference Date
The most current life expectancy estimates are for 2005.
Release Date
Life expectancy estimates for 2005 were released in June 2007.
Access
Information about life expectancy is accessible through the Victorian Government Health Information portal. Click on 'Life Expectancy' to access reports.
